Support for Vulnerable People

Summary

PhotoThis section gives some information on the support that is available in the Essex and Suffolk areas for those who may need help to live independently.

Further Information

Supporting People is a working partnership of local government, service users and support agencies. The Supporting People programme offers vulnerable people the opportunity to improve their quality of life by providing a stable environment which enables greater independence. When young people are leaving care or people are recovering from mental health problems or drug or alcohol dependency or have been released from prison, they may require some support to integrate back into the community and become independent.

Essex
Swan Housing Association Support Service which has been accredited by Essex County Council will offer housing related support through a Gateway access service from 1st April 2007. The aim is to show people how to be independent in their own homes and they will be helped to maintain a tenancy and improve their life skills. This floating support is available for a minimum of two hours a week and a maximum of ten hours for a period of up to two years.

Suffolk

Suffolk Supporting People are currently making changes to floating support. They are re-commissioning floating support for when the existing contracts end in March 2008. New contracts are to be awarded in autumn 2007. Provision will be through an access and referral point which will be introduced in March 2008. Providers will be accredited through Supporting People.

Anyone can refer a person for support and support is available for people in all tenure types. The service is free.
